I lost my one and only sibbling suddenly last month and an Uncle the month before. I hope you are doing well and are in great health. I hope that the New Year has gotten off to a Great start for you all and that you are in great health & loving life. Shirley Nanette, Tony Pacini, Ed Bennet, Mel Brown, Oregon Art Beat Equals Music

Well we, the audience and singer Shirley Nanette, and drummer Mel Brown, and bassist Ed Bennett and Pianist Tony Pacini and OPB's Oregon Art Beat had very good night indeed at Jimmy Maks in Portland.

The creative juices were flowing and the music reflected some original work this night. Many songs and so little tape. We can all look forward to the story that will air on "Oregon Art Beat" in the coming months.

There was a duet with Tony Pacini and one with Ed Bennett in which Shirley works without a microphone while some adjustments are being made. It would be remarkable for the sheer force of singing strength alone, but it is also creative work by Shirley and Ed.

Oregon Art Beat videographers were capturing the action and this recording will comprise a component in the segment to be broadcast on the program in future months. They also visited a performance at Augustana Lutheran Church.

Many of you have heard Shirley Nanette (shirleynanette.com) and know that she is one of the best singers in the area. We have finally completed her new CD ‘Starting Here, Starting Now’ and the CD release party is July 13th at the Classical Chinese Garden from 7 PM-9:30 PM with the Tony Pacini Quartet featuring Mel Brown on drums, Frank Tribble on guitar, Ed Bennett on bass and of course the great Tony Pacini musical director and piano. Catering for VIP’s ($125.00 pledge drive package) by A Simple Elegance with a no-host bar. CD’s and DVD’s will be on sale. The garden is gorgeous as will be the concert.

Hello All ~

Just wanted to remind you that this coming Sunday I will be doing the Jazz Service @ Augustana Lutheran Church and Oregon Art Beat ( OPB)will be filming a segment on me there. I do hope you all can come and join me . Augustana has had a Jazz Service there for quite sometime and I am there frequently through-out the year, when the other vocalist ( Marilyn Keller) is not there. Anyhow the address is on N.E. 14th & Knott St. close to the Lloyd Center. It sits on the corner of 15th & Knott and the entrance is on 14th Ave. We will start @ 6pm-7pm. Hope to see you there. Hope all is well with you , and that your Easter was Wonder for you and your family, Easter eggs and all !
I didn't have much going on in March, but I'm sort of glad it wasn't as I had an awlful virus and had to go to the
ER for a couple of bags of fluid. But not to worry I'm feeling much better now, and hope you didn't get it.
For all of you that made Jimmy Mak's last month for my Live CD Recording, I just want to let you know how
much I appreciate you're being there, it meant so much to see you there, and oh so much fun !
For all of you who didn't make it (it was Sold - Out w/ standing room only all night) I wish there had been enough
room for you to come, it was a gasssss ! I can't wait for everything to be finished, Audio & Video.

The moon eclipse had just arrived out in front of Jimmy Maks to escort this event through the evening.

This is an event you'll want to continue to be part of. Shirley is making an album with KMHD and if you were there you are part of this show and CD. With a band like these gentlemen and a setting like Jimmy Mak's, it is sure to be a landmark event.

I was in attendance and there was world class jazz being recorded. Shirley had a vision and was executing inlcuding not being shy about stopping the performance to start again to get the piece done right. The time was then with these musicians and the recorder running to make it perfect. I'm loooking very forward to the release of this project.

On the Beat: Shirley Nanette - Woman of Many Voices

When you first hear Shirley Nanette sing, you might think
of Nancy Wilson or another singer with a lush, silky sound.
Louis Armstrong or Ethel Merman don't immediately leap to
mind. Yet if you went to the Jazz Quarry in the 1980s, you
might have seen Shirley channel Louis in "Ain't Misbehavin,"
followed by Sarah Vaughan, with a bridge by Billie Holiday
and finale by Esther Phillips. Talk about getting your money's
worth!
Nanette has long been fascinated by the voices of other
singers. Even her singing "debut" at the age of 7—
"Tennessee Waltz" over the intercom in her doctor's
office—paid tribute to one of her childhood idols, Patti
Paige. When she was about 15, she got her first paying gig
at Van's Olympic Room at N. Vancouver and Fremont
streets.
"I was nervous, but excited at the same time" says
Nanette, recalling the songs that launched her career. "I
probably sang some blues, and I sang "Leave My Kitten
Alone," the Ike and Tina Turner song "I Idolize You" and Etta
James' "All I Can Do Is Cry."
From that modest start, Nanette has gone on to sing with
symphony orchestras throughout the country, opened for
numerous singers ranging from Billy Eckstine to Frankie Valli
and the Four Seasons. From uncut diamond to jazz gem,
Nanette has become a jazz treasure in Oregon and beyond.
Nanette likes the structure of singing with symphonies.
"You have a captive audience," she said. "They're not
doing anything but coming there to see the show. There are
no bartenders mixing drinks etc."
She is equally elated by singing jazz with small groups in a
club setting.
"On the other hand there is
something about having an
intimate audience with a trio
that's very satisfying," she said.
"You can stretch out musically.
You can ad lib and talk to them
as if they are family. I like to tell
people sometimes that when
they come to see me, they're in
my living room. I can just be me."
Shirley's vocal talents caught the attention of the nation in
the 1980s. She beat out thousands of contestants to win a
national talent show on the NBC television show "Fantasy,"
a precursor to "American Idol." Although she was seen by
over 20 million viewers and won a host of prizes, including a
trip to Hawaii and a week-long gig at the Tropicana in Las
Vegas, the competition failed to make Shirley Nanette a
household name.
Her success on the show resulted in a few unexpected
Portland links. She played the Tropicana gig with Mel
Brown, George Mitchell and Phil Baker. When Shirley was
in Burbank, she watched the taping of the Tonight Show
from backstage.
"When it aired, there I was standing in the wings with a
Jazz Society of Oregon T-Shirt on," she said laughing. "So I
DID make it on Johnny Carson!"
Nanette has embraced every experience she's had, both
good and bad. "I've learned a lot from both," she says.
"They were great teachers in showing me what to do and
what not to do." "American Idol" wannabees could learn
from her advice.
"Work hard at your craft," she says. "Be YOU in your
music. Make it your song. Don't worry about being like
someone else. Persevere and be persistent."
Shirley has a loyal following in Oregon. But she said the
number of venues for jazz vocalists has shrunk in Portland
since the 1980s. KMHD will sponsor a concert featuring
Shirley at the Old Church on Sunday, November 26. She
will perform with Ron Steen, Tony Pacini, Brian Ward and
Kevin Deitz. KMHD will produce a CD from the concert.
KMHD supporters can get tickets to the concert with a
buffet and the resulting CD with a $150 pledge to the
station during its fall pledge drive. Stay tuned to KMHD for
